I have always had a lot of questions.
Usually, one question leads to another. Something I notice in finance, business, work or everyday life stays in my head, and I find myself pulling it apart long after the original question should probably have been answered.
Why do we do it this way?
What are we actually trying to achieve?
And would we still make the same decision if something changed?
Fallow Lane started as a place for me to follow those questions.
Why finance?
What interests me about finance isn’t only the numbers. It’s the thinking behind them.
Almost every financial concept exists because someone, somewhere, has to make a decision. How much should we keep in reserve? Is this investment still worth pursuing? What are we giving up by choosing one option over another? What are we actually trying to maximise?
The more I explore these questions, the more I notice that they don’t always stay within finance.
We make investments in our own lives too. Not only with money, but with our time, energy, knowledge, relationships and sometimes years we can never get back.
Yet we don’t necessarily approach those decisions with the same reasoning we use in business.
I find that gap fascinating.
Not because I think finance can tell us how to live. Life is far too complicated for that. But sometimes taking an idea out of its usual context makes me see something differently or leaves me with an entirely new question.
That’s a lot of what Fallow Lane is about.
What you’ll find here
Finance is where I explore financial ideas by asking not only how they work, but why they exist and what decisions they are actually helping us make.
But Why? is where those questions wander a little further. Sometimes into business, work, decisions and sometimes life itself.
Conversations brings other perspectives into the picture, through discussions with people who have built things, managed businesses, made difficult decisions, changed direction or simply see something differently from the way I do.
A little about me
My own path has moved through engineering, business and finance. I’ve worked across different industries and markets, built a small business of my own, and changed direction more than once along the way.
Perhaps that’s partly why decisions interest me so much.
The more I learn and experience, the more I realise that the question itself can change.
